Türkiye’s energy vision for 2040 aims to increase renewables’ share of the country’s total installed capacity to 77%, from around 63% today.
Türkiye is aiming to reach an installed solar and wind capacity of 175 GW by 2040, according to targets set out in its new national energy policy.
The country’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar presented Türkiye’s national energy vision for 2040 earlier this week ahead of the start of COP31, to be held in Antalya, beginning November 9.
The plan projects total installed power capacity will rise from the current 123 GW to 281 GW, with renewables share of total installed capacity increasing from the current 63% to 77%.
Speaking during a launch event, Bayraktar said Türkiye will reach its 281 GW target with support from its Renewable Energy Resource Areas (YEKA) program and with the build out of international projects, capacity increases and renovations, and additions of hybrid capacities at existing plants.
He added that distributed systems up to 1 MW in size will be another key focus.
“Wars and crises have shown that distributed production has become very vital,” Bayraktar explained. “That is, on-site production, on-site consumption. Energy infrastructures become the main target in wars. Our distribution of production also has a strategic meaning. We aim to establish small power plants under 1 MW more intensively.”
Bayraktar said reaching the 281 GW target will require around $190 billion, approximately $100 billion of which is expected to go towards rolling out additional solar and wind projects.
Another feature of the plan is increased flexibility and storage, with Bayraktar stating Türkiye needs 140 GWh of storage capacity. He also pointed to increased interconnection, with plans to take interconnection capacity from 5.4 GW today to 15 GW by the end of next decade.
Additional targets set out by the vision include reaching 92% national production and 36% electrification by 2040. It also plans to reach a nuclear capacity of 10 GW.
Türkiye’s new energy roadmap follows an ongoing target to reach 120 GW of combined solar and wind capacity by 2035.
The country’s cumulative solar capacity stood at around 26.9 GW by the end of the first half of 2026, after adding 2.1 GW across the first six months of the year and 4.7 GW across 2025.
Türkiye’s most recent YEKA tender concluded earlier this week, awarding 785 MW of solar capacity across 11 projects.
