Under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, 81 homes in Dhordo have been equipped with solar rooftops generating 177 kW, producing an estimated 2.95 lakh units annually, saving ₹16,064 per household and generating surplus income for the villagers.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on his visit to Gujarat on Saturday, will dedicate Dhordo village in Kutch district — recognised by the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) as the ‘Best Tourism Village’ — as “Solar Village.” This will be the fourth village in Gujarat to become fully solar powered after Modhera (Mahesana), Sukhi (Kheda), and Masali (Banaskantha).
Under PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, every residential electricity connection in Dhordo village has been solarised, allowing houses to generate their own power. As part of this initiative, 81 homes have been equipped with solar rooftops, adding a capacity of 177 kilowatts. The project is expected to produce 2.95 lakh units of electricity annually, bringing an estimated benefit of ₹16,064 per year to each home, stated an official release from the Gujarat government on Friday. Beyond reducing electricity bills, villagers will also earn from surplus power supplied to the grid. Altogether, Dhordo is projected to gain over ₹13 lakh annually through combined savings and additional income, the release added.
Villagers save on bills, earn from surplus power Miyan Hussain, Sarpanch of Dhordo village, stated, “With solar rooftops now installed in every home, electricity bills will be greatly reduced, providing significant relief to the villagers. Supported by government subsidies and bank loans, the villagers have incurred minimal expenses, and this initiative has brought immense joy to our community.”
During his visit, PM Modi will review and inspect the Rs 4500 crore National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) project at Lothal in Ahmedabad district. NMHC will seamlessly blend history, education, research, and entertainment to showcase the illustrious maritime legacy of Lothal, which served as a thriving port and ship-repair centre five thousand years ago. The project will feature the world’s tallest lighthouse museum, standing 77 meters high with an open gallery at 65 meters, offering visitors a panoramic view of the entire complex. A nighttime lighting show will add to its attraction. The complex will also include a floating restaurant, a 100-room tent city and resort, and e-car facilities for convenient movement around the museum. Parking for 500 electric cars will be provided, and a 66 kV substation is already operational.
