Police say work began last Wednesday on removing the final parts of that encampment.
“When we begin the process of dismantling encampments, it’s important to note that these are active construction zones,” said Edmonton Police Service Acting Sgt. Chris McFarlane.
“In addition to trespassing, there are serious risks associated with visiting these sites, regardless of their status, and we are asking members of the public to please stay away from them.”
Police said five people had been living in the camp that was disguised with leaves, branches, and black-coloured tarp.
Police video footage of the encampment showed shotgun shells, knives, machetes, and what appears to be an automatic firearm as well as about $8,000 worth of stolen goods.
Twenty violation tickets were written, and 10 warrants executed when the encampment was closed down, police say.
An additional encampment site discovered earlier this month and located on nearby private property has also been cleared and is being assessed for cleanup and demolition.
If members of the public encounter an encampment, they can call 311 or use the City of Edmonton’s online reporting tool at 311.edmonton.ca.
