Where is the best place in Ireland to see the solar eclipse today?
An eclipse is a rare phenomenon when the moon blocks the sun during normal daylight hours, plunging the earth beneath it into darkness.
This evening at 6pm, Ireland will experience a ‘partial eclipse’, in which the moon blocks out most of the sun, but not the entire sun.
However, people in Mallorca will experience a ‘total eclipse’, when for a brief moment, no daylight will shine upon the Spanish city.
On Newstalk Breakfast , Alan O’Reilly from Carlow Weather said cloud cover is “going to vary a lot”, which will obscure the eclipse.
“People that are really into this, that have been waiting for this day for maybe months and years, have been planning to head to certain locations,” he said.
“But they need to look at the cloud forecast and they need to probably keep a close eye on the satellite images as we go through today.
“Because there is going to be some cloud around, especially in the southwest.
“The east and the southeast does look the best location in terms of clear skies.”
Mr O’Reilly advised that people who ar concerned about cloud cover obscuring their view should “keep an eye on the satellite images”.
“I’ll be sharing them on my social media as well, but you can look at them on the Met Éireann site and a lot of apps,” he said.
“If you look at the satellite image, they have the cloud cover that they show to you in real time almost or maybe 15 minutes behind
“There’s a lot of cloud around this morning, there’s even some showers, [but] cloud will break up as we go through the afternoon.
“So, don’t panic and don’t jump in the car this morning and start driving four or five hours because you may only have to move, maybe, an hour’s drive to be able to capture it.”
Mr O’Reilly also reminded people not to look directly at the eclipse without special glasses, as the sun’s rays will still be powerful enough to damage their eyes.
