840 solar panels could be installed at motorway services

Plans have been submitted to install nearly 1,000 solar panels on the roof of a service station on the M40.

Under the proposals, 840 solar panels would be installed on the roof, delivering a total generating capacity of 382.2 kilowatts.

If approved, the panels will be clamped onto the roof of Beaconsfield Services, across the border in Buckinghamshire, using a low-profile mounting system designed for metal trapezoidal roofs.

It is estimated that the system will produce 307,801 kWh/annum which will offset 69.25 tonnes of CO2 annually.

Planning documents said: The proposed installation will help contribute towards this goal by offsetting a significant amount of CO2.

“The installation is larger than 50kW and so no longer considered as microgeneration, however all permitted development rights have been adhered to when designing the system and as such, prior approval is being sought.

The application confirms that the panels would be installed entirely on the existing roof space at Beaconsfield Services, at Junction 2 of the M40, with no changes proposed to the buildings footprint.

Buckinghamshire Council will now consider whether the scheme meets the relevant criteria for approval.

It comes as Extra MSA and Gridserve have installed a new electric vehicle super hub at the Beaconsfield site.

Twelve new high-power charging bays have been installed at the services, bringing the total to twenty-one chargers.

The chargers will be capable of supplying 400kW, enabling drivers with the latest car models to add over 100 miles of range in less than 10 minutes.

Tom Dobson, CEO at Extra MSA Group which owns the site, said: Our ambition has always been to go the Extra mile for our customers.

Partnering with GRIDSERVE, one of the most trusted names in the sector, ensures we can meet the rapidly growing demand for convenient, high-speed charging at our Beaconsfield site.
